Forza Motorsport 4 BMW Competition: Play Online, Win M5 for Real!

Some may say that video game competitions are for geeks. However, something tells us that this particular competition from the makers of the Forza Motorsport racing game will attract a huge crowd, given that the winner gets to own a…brand-new BMW M5!

It sounds too good to be true: a competition giving away a 560HP twin-turbocharged saloon that can complete the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.4 seconds?

Yet that is exactly what is being provided as a prize on the Limited Edition Forza Motorsport 4 racing simulation game for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console that features the M5 on its cover.

Starting from Friday, October 14, members of the Xbox Live community, as well as visitors to selected BMW branches, the BMW showroom in Berlin and the BMW Welt in Munich, can register to enter the BMW M5 Forza Cup competition.

The 16 fastest virtual racers will compete in the M5 Forza Cup final that will take place on November 26 at the BMW Welt. And, like we said before, the winner will take home a ring of power a real M5. Not bad at all.

BMW M5 gets an Acoustic VIDEO

As with any new BMW, the latest V8-powered M5 F10 comes packed with an array of gadgets and gimmicky features, some of which you may like, some of which you may not.

One of the sports saloon's new features that may dismay purists is the Active Sound Design. To explain, this system is designed to –according to BMW- "accurately replicate" the sounds of the bi-turbocharged V8 engines inside the cabin through the vehicle's audio system.

BMW says that the electronically controlled system evenly spreads the sound across all five seats and that it takes into consideration a variety of factors including the performance mode settings. More details on the new feature in the press blurb after the jump.

From BMW Press Release:

Active Sound Design delivers precise feedback.

M5 drivers will be given an even more direct reminder of their car’s performance capability by technology that brings the distinctive sound of the high-performance V8 – in all its glory – into the cabin of the new BMW M5. The Active Sound Design technology specially developed for the new BMW M5 takes its cues from the driving situation at any one time to deliver an accurate reproduction of the engine’s sound through the car’s audio system.

The system’s digital signal processing exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to reflect the engine’s revs and torque, and the car’s speed over the road. The result over a smoothly driven journey is a discreet soundtrack in keeping with the harmonious and assured characteristics of the V8 powerplant. A stamp on the accelerator, meanwhile, prompts an immediate audible response to match the instantaneous – and typically M – burst of power from beneath the bonnet.

In generating its signals, Active Sound Design takes its cues from the firing sequence of the eight-cylinder engine and the frequency range of the exhaust system. This gives the driver an extremely accurate impression of current engine load and an even more intense sensation of the V8’s high-performance characteristics.

At the same time the Active Sound Design control unit ensures an even spread of sound across all five seats of the new BMW M5, while observing the legal guidelines governing noise emissions inside and outside the car. The characteristics of the sound produced by the technology also adjust to the engine settings selected by the driver. For example, switching to “Sport” or “Sport+” mode sharpens not only the engine’s responsiveness but also the acoustic experience inside the car.

Find of the Day: 1988 E28 BMW M5 for $18,987

We drooled all over the E28 535i, but now we're in pain. Behold this pristine example of a 1988 E28 BMW M5, up for sale by Autohaus for US $18,987 - that would be €13.338 at today's exchange rates.

In Europe, the E28 BMW M5 was launched in 1985 and was equipped with a 3.5-liter 24-valve 6-cylinder engine with six separate throttle butterflies, delivering 286 hp and 251 lb-ft (340Nm) of torque. However, this here example is a U.S.-spec model, meaning it comes with the less powerful S38B35 straight-six due to stricter emission regulations. It was rated at 256HP and 243 lb-ft (330 Nm).

Still, it was a bit quicker and cost less than the M6 of the era (which used the same engine) accelerating from standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 6.7 seconds. It also had slightly different headlights, bumpers and tires than the Euro model.

Only one exterior color was available (black), while the standard equipment list included amenities such as a full leather interior, power-adjusted seats, cruise control, ABS, 16-inch wheels with 225/50 Pirelli tires and an AM/FM cassette stereo.

According to the BMW M registry, only 1,340 units made it to American shores with an MSRP price of US $47,500 in 1988.

The car being sold here is said to have been driven a mere 51,400 miles. Aside from the tan leather heated seats, it has air conditioning, power moon roof/windows and brand new Bridgestone Potenza tires. Also, the factory sound system has been replaced by a Sony unit, with 10 disk CD changer.
