Under the skin of this mule is the next S-class.
The next generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-class is being readied for a launch in the 2013 calendar year. Expectations are high for Stuttgart’s luxo-cruiser: The S-class was the standard of the segment and is still a great car, but it’s getting a bit long in the tooth and has fallen under attack from newer competition. BMW’s 7-series, which topped the S in a comparison test, and the Audi A8, now in its third generation, are the sporty alternatives; the Lexus LS is the cushiest competitor and beat the big Merc to hybrid technology; and, in a wider sense, the Porsche Panamera and the Bentley Continental Flying Spur compete with the S-class, too.
